View Full Version : Quick Question

Although theres probably some thread i couldn't find where i couldve asked this question im too lazy to keep looking. so...

i just finished writing the script for a short film (about 20-30min) i may or may not eventually shoot and i feel like the title absolutly blows.

You know how every now and again you hear about the kid(s) that got lost in the wilderness on some campout or whatnot and are eventually rescued. well i decided to write a screenplay about that.

Its about a boyscout named simon who is lost on a hiking trip in a rural woodland/farmland area and its more about his psychological transformation while being alone then anything else. and theres really very little comic relief. and the end is kinda, well... different then you may expect. but the best idea i could come up with for a title is...
Where's Simon?

now i can't even begin to describe how much that doesn't fit this story. and i dont want some dumb one word title like all these shorts on youtube (Escape, Lost, Wilderness, etc.)
so bottom line. im asking for some help.

any suggestions :D

I based most of these at the thought at being the only human in the surrounding area, which may or may not be creepy. I placed myself trying to sleep in a pitch black forest in the middle of god knows where, everything is silent but you can hear the flora and fauna around you, and all the little cracks and crunches of leaves and twigs, is that an animal, or is it rescue, or is it worse.

What kind of psychological transformation?

Is it like...he goes nuts or has an epiphany?

Very important for deciding on a title. However, "The Trees Are Talking to Me!" is an appropriate title for either.

Also maybe consider,
"The Woods"
"*the name of the woods* Woods"
"Long, Lonely Nights"

A bit more info would maybe help. Slightly obscure titles are much more interesting than obvious ones.

"Off the Edge of the Map" is an absolutely brilliant title.

ok by psychological transformation i meant an already reserved and introverted child is going to become kinda like tommy. you know the rock movie movie made by the who. tommy sees his mom cheating on his dad then killing his dad and he basicaly falls into himself and becomes blind and deaf and basicaly creates things in his mind. this is sorta my character but not to the blind/deaf extreme

You know, a lot of times one word titles can be better than something like

"Simon's Exciting Encounters Off the Edge of the Map Including His Slow Descent into Madness With Very Little Comic Relief: a yourmindsinnerworking film"

Yeah, I think a lot of the time one word titles fit better, and not neccesarily for youtube videos. For instance, Christopher Nolan's first three feature length movies all had one word titles that fit really well.

Tommy is an amazing work of bizarro art. I like the original concept album much more then the film though.

Is that the title you decided on?

The 2 "the's" in the title makes it a bit awkward and a mouth-full.

How about "Off the Map's Edge"? It flows nicer.

That does scan better.

I got to thinking that you might also substitute the word "Over" for "Off"

Over the Map's Edge

It implies a surpassing, as opposed to a mis-alignment.

And that extra-long title from New Spark made me laugh - It sounds vaguely Victorian:

"On Maps And O'erstepping Their Edges, or: The Fantastic Tale of Simon's Tribulations in the Wilderness."

Or even "Beyond Map's Edge" or just "Map's Edge" or "Edge of the Map" or "Edge"

I'm sorry, when I hear the name Simon I think "DEMOLITION MAN." But that's probably just me.

Anyways, titles right? How pretentious are we allowed to get?

"Scout's Honor"
"10 Things to do in the Woods When You're Lost"
"Canteen Marine"
"How Far Can You Go Into the Woods?"
"Courage Without Fire"
"Missing" (because I can't use "lost")
