Hey everyone,

If you watched this weeks BFX you heard a little about the "Mogulween" pumpkin carving contest. Well here are all the dirty details:

1. Send us a picture or 30 sec. video clip of your Indy Mogul pumpkin. Meaning you carve it yourself and the design has something to do with Indy Mogul. (i.e. Our logo, a giant sandwich or other episode specific design, of our beautiful faces, anything "Indy Mogulish")

2. Get us your picture by November 1st. You can upload (http://www.indymogul.com/submit) it to our site. Just make sure you label everything "pumpkin carving contest" or something like that.

3. Winner will be picked by the Indy Mogul team and will be announced November 5th.

4. The grand prize!!!! A miniDV camera (with a microphone input of course), a complete sound set up (shotgun mic, boom pole, cables, adapters), editing software (Adobe Premiere Elements), and some DV tapes.


I wouldn't post your pumpkin picture here. Someone might steal your idea. When the contest is over we'll be posting the best entries.

It'll be an NTSC camera so I'm not sure how it'll work with your stuff over there.

If someone in another country wins, I think we can get you a PAL camera. B&H (an amazing camera store in NYC) sells both NTSC and PAL. You have to win first though.

It's pretty easy to do, allso a good method for complex images is to not cut all the way through and insted only cut about half way through, this allows more detail and The light from the candle will still shine through!

I would really love to win this...but due to my extremely horrible bad luck, I'd probably make the best pumpkin out of everybody, then some random power outage or something would occur, and it will ruin my video upload to your website and then I wont win. maybe you should do a film contest as well as this, maybe not even a halloween one but maybe a contest where every month you have to make a film utilizing one of the indymogul effects and the prize being the best three films are shown like on a tuesday or sunday or something at the end of the month, wouldnt cost anything for you guys on indymogul and the winning filmmakers will get a lot of constructive criticism and it oculd give ideas to stuggling filmmakers! Just an idea but I think this would work well and give us lot a window to have our videos viewed in large numbers, sites like youtube are hard 2 get many views, you could put links to the youtube sites of other videos that werent quite good enough but deserve a mention at the end of the vids as well so everyone gets the benefit.

Now that sounds like a great idea. Nearly no work to add to the Indy Mogul staff, and it make the site more interactive. Maybe for the fourth week of the month, take the best 3 and put them up against each other in an online vote. Winner gets a T-Shirt, or respect. Whichever is cheaper.

Unfortunantly we have to keep the 18 or over age limit for the contest. I've talked to a few of you and read the posts and everyone has some really valid points. I totally hear you, but being part of a company with a lawyer and such we really need to keep the contests legal. Especially since this contest involves carving pumpkins and knives etc.

I also realize that pumpkins are hard to come by in some other countries. For these people I would suggest getting creative. If we got an awesome gourd carving that would be cool. The idea is to capture the spirit of Indy Mogul and Halloween...AKA MOGULWEEN!

gourds are a pain in the butt to prepare for carving if you dont know what you are doing.

But as a final product, you will have a huge hollow egg that is soft and springy like thick leather.

I've just started a Media Production MA, this prize would be (to use a truly American phrase) AWESOME for my course...

At the moment I'm limited to booking out the university cameras for a day at a time or stealing my friends camera when needed...

I went to morrisons for a pumpkin today and I nearly wlaked past the pumpkins they were that small, and there was only five of them! I went and asked the woman at the counter if they had more and they said no they werent doing too well pumpkin wise (damn floods!) and when I asked if she had a gourd she looked at me like i was mental, anyway I bought the biggest pumpkin they had (not very big tbh but did me best) only for my bag to break (I'd also bought some beers for a night in with me bird) and the pumpkin to roll out in to the wheels of a passing vw van. I could have cried. I believe its a message from god telling me not to enter the contest, DAMN YOU GOD why be so harsh?!

Where I live there are no pumpkins, I ended up using a courgette that looked exactly like a pumpkin, it was home grown and well, It looked demented until you think its a pumpkin. But its about the size of my fist, so yeh, quite hard to carve.

Lol I dont need to! I knew it was the Celts that celebrated it I just thought samhain originated in Ireland because the Irish for haloween is "oiche samhaine" and oiche just means night!

samhian was the gaelic celebration of the end of the harvest season!

sometimes it helps to pay attention in history class:D

I dont think that makes a difference if you are only working with the vid online. The only time that should make a difference is if you are burning it to a DVD. If you are, NTSC is for North America, and PAL is for nearly everyone else.

I actually think I could be cursed with this pumpkin contest, first I bought one pumpkin that got run over by a VW van, then today I finished my pumpkin and thought it looked great only for my cat to later decide to stick its head in and see what was there and try and nibble it I guess (Nibble it? Do cats like pumpkin? Mine seems to) only for it to push its head in (I wasnt there but my sister was and she did NOTHING to stop old Magpie from trying to fashion my contest entry into a helmet) and force that design that took THREE HOURS off the kitchen counter on to the floor. Yes. You can enter in the UK. If you win, the camera will be PAL format. You must be 18 or older to enter or have someone of age to enter for you. All entries must be submited via the upload link at the top of each page. Entries may either be a photo or a video no more than 30 seconds long. All losing entries forfeit their soul to Steve Nelson immediately after the winner is announced.

I thought the same thing. I was able to cram a good amount into 30 seconds after some editing. It just took me a while to cut down and still keep it good. An extra 15 seconds would have made all the difference.

i sent an email to indy mogul, but i figured id ask here, and i noticed it was a semi-common question that was left unanswered so far.

what if our video is a few seconds longer?

i.e.-mine, 39 seconds.

i can trim it down, if need be.

but i already did some trimming and would hate to do more.

The rules specifically state 30 seconds or less. I dunno if it's disqualified if youre over the limit, but why take the chance. I'd cut it if I were you. Besides, I dont theink they'll come out and say if it's OK to go over 30 seconds. If they did, they would end up having to wade through a lot more video than nessesary.

I really don't think it matters if it's a few seconds over, it probably wouldn't matter if you sent in a 45 second clip. They gave us the 30 second limit so that when they go through all of the entries, they wouldn't have to sit through a bunch of five minute long videos.

Sorry I haven't been better at responding to this thread. I think the two biggest questions are:
1. WHAT IF MY VIDEO IS A FEW SECONDS OVER THE LIMIT.

2. CAN I SEND IN A PHOTO AND A VIDEO.

Answer:
1. If your video is a few seconds over I don't think it is a big deal. On the other hand there really should not be a reason to go over. This is not a "pumpkin MOVIE" contest, but a pumpkin carving contest. It's about the pumpkin not the video. It only needs to display the pumpkin.

2. Yes you can send in a video and a couple photos if you want. Just make sure to CLEARLY label everything as your creation and for the pumpkin contest.

ErikBeck_pumpkincontest_pic2.jpg
ErikBeck_pumpkincontest_pic3.jpg

I made a short 1 minute (approx.) of the pumpkin I carved for the contest. Is the length going to matter? Do I have to shorten it or will you accept it as is?
