Is the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1000 good for a beginner like me?
I've seen a couple of reviews, some say its good and some say its bad. I found a pretty good deal on it so before I buy it I just need to know if its good for a beginner.

steve reviews it in this episode of weekend extra:

i've used it and find it to be passable. a dv cam at the same price with 3 chips and a mic input would be better, though.
here's some footage that was shot on location with it:

the resolution is great, but the colors kind of lack dynamics.

It's not bad, but like Jared said, a dv camcorder with 3 CCD or an HD CMOS would be better... I almost went with one of those cameras but instead got a Canon HG10. An HD CMOS sensor is better than any 3 CCD camera could ever hope to be.

I think it has pretty good quality I have used it before it has a mic jack and headphones and is selectable in SD or HD
