Hmm...Have you tried using some wipes of some sort to clean it off, maybe a tooth pick to go around the crevices?

Submerge in water. Wait 12 hours. (don't do that, it'd be bad)
17thletterfilms is right. You should try that.

Under warranty, take to a licensed repair service - you won't be able to get at the sticky internals without voiding your warranty.
If the cam is out of warranty, check if there's any way to get the panel holding the button in place off without breaking anything. If you can get to the button, you can take it out and clean it. This is what I wound up doing to clean a stuck power switch on a laptop. Disassembly is the only way to clean every surface of the switch - capillary action is going to draw the syrup past where you can get a swab from the outside.
If you can't (or don't want to) open the camera up to get at the button, you'll have to make do with completely powering your camera off and attempting to swab the switch out with a cotton swab and a quick-drying cleanser like rubbing alcohol. Allow the switch to dry out completely before powering the camera. You will have to repeat this process several times, as the first use of alcohol will not clear any syrup that has been drawn into the camera by capillary action.

Use some rubbing alcohol or some nail polish remover.....or if you really need
to fix it badly and go overboard, open it up...near the button and see if you can
clean it up from inside. Your best bet is to go to a local electronics repair shop
and get it fixed. They might even do it for free, if it's that minor.
