right when a huge lazer blast hits this radio-tower looking lazer turret on planet hoth in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The sound byte for the explosion is used again in hundreds of movies...

In fact i notice lots of sound bytes used across films, a frequent one is gun and scream sound effects from the original Doom game used in movies. Star Wars sound samples are used over and over again in movies too. I guess directors think people wont notice?

Day of the Dead features a man torn in twain. It is orgasmic.

Toward the end of the original Sleepawaycamp, the camp director gets an arrow shot directly through the throat without a cutaway. I still cant figure out how they did it. Its really great effect for a 80's flick. I cant seem to find a video online of that death scene which is too bad because it's pretty cool.

OK. I found a vid of the death scene with the arrow in the neck that I spoke of previously. Unfortunately, its in a video collage of the whole movie with Weird Al playing over it. The scene I was refering to is at 3:09. If you haven't seen the whole movie before and dont want the suprise ending ruined for you, stop the video after the the arrow in the neck (also, don't watch the Robot Chicken spoof either).

here's the link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnqxUZmvjQc)

I've done a similar effect before. It's actually pretty easy. I'll see if I can get pictures from the director.

Do as follows:
- Bury the actor such that only his head, shoulders and arms protrude (either in dirt or cut a hole in a fake section of flooring).
- Affix the fake torso onto him and fill it full of guts (rig up some blood hosing, too)
- Attach the legs to the fake torso with chunks of flesh (pigment latex red, paint it onto a flat surface, rub it with your palms and roll it up when dry - it forms thick, tendon-like strings).
- Finally, duct tape a flat sheet of flesh-coloured latex over the waist of both the legs and the torso (this creates the actor's 'stomach')
- Rip in half

Tom Savini has a two books out titled, rather creatively, 'Grande Illusions 1' and Grande Illusions 2.' These explain a large number of his effects.

P.S. I realise my instructions are a bit sparse. As Erick says, the key to DIY is that you do it yourself. Don't replicate my, or anyone else's, effects. Add your own spin on the principle - this is just the basic idea.

If you want to talk funniest special effect, watch titanic. When the ship goes upright, a passenger falls off and hits the propeller on the way down and bounces to the side. I've watched that so many times in normal, slow, super speed, and reverse. Still makes me laugh.

In my opinion, one of the most phenomenal SFX scenes in film history:

And what's more amazing is that 2001 : a space odyssey was released in 1968.
