I don't think I am alone when I say that there are too many REMAKES out there and it's just getting old and sad. These days everything seems to be remade for the umpteenth time. And I think this seriously needs to stop. I just found out that Wuthering Heights is being remade YET again. I mean come on. How many adaptions have there been of this novel?
Do we really need another one? Is this what hollywood is reduced to these days? Just a bunch of mindless remakes with no substance to them? Enough is enough. Stop the remakes!.

I half agree with you but it's not just remakes out there. The best two movies of the past decade just came out a less than two months ago, There Will Be Blood and No Country for old men. Cloverfield was extremely original. Juno was great too.

I saw Juno. Didn't like it. I thought some parts were enjoyable but over all I felt it was way overrated. But that's just me.
But I'm not here to complain about the movies I saw this year. Just the remakes that continues to come out of hollywoods rectum.

Are you high? I would say TWBB is the best film in five years, and that NCFOM is great too, but how can you call cloverfield "extremely original"?

It's not a matter of ideas running short. There are PLENTY of new ideas, just not a lot of executives that want to spend money on projects that don't have some kind of proven track record, or audience associated with them.
Remakes have shown themselves to be successful in the past, and are usually from material that have been highly successful, so its kind of like, "Well no brainer, these will make money." So those get the support for the wide release because they simply are seen as having the highest potential for success.

Maybe because of the fact that it's the first movie I've seen from the perspective of a home camcorder. If that's not originality being displayed, what the hell is originality?

You've never heard of the Blair Witch Project?
And that wasn't even the first.

Yea, but that movie sucked badly, I remember laughing at parts of it. Cloverfield put you in the heat of all the action and was just intense all around.

What about Cannibal Holocaust?
Just because of how it's filmed isn't original doesn't mean the story itself isn't original.
It's the combination of its elements that makes it original, not because all of it's elements are totally original. Because if you're just analyzing elements of a story, then NOTHING is original, it's only in new combination of elements that originality is created.

I see were you're coming from. I also like cloverfield, it is a new twist on monster movies, but it's far from "extremely original". What I would consider more original that the greengrass-cam is how the actuall monster isn't really a character in the movie, and there was no scientist spitting out exposition.

That's true. Cannibal Holocaust used the "found footage" idea long before Blair Witch did it.
I feel as long as they remake stinker movies it's OK since they could improve on something that sucked the first time around. But to remake classics is heresy. I never saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and never will as I'm a die hard fan of the original. And enough of the Asian remakes. If you're too lazy or stupid to read subtitles that's your loss. We don't need "americanized" versions to cater to the illiterate.

Not to mention that the entire story loses a lot of it's internal coherance when you remove it from it's cultural context.
Japan simply has different myths than us, tales of vengeful spirits and shintoist concepts are part of their history, and they lose a lot of meaning when they are shoved into our culture.

Good point. Another thing is it isn't uncommon for a Japanese movie to leave things unexplained. They expect you to think it over as part of the entertainment value. Western civilizations tend to want total explanation on their movies.

You don't want to see the remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Trust me. You really don't want to see it. Shot for shot, it's pretty much the same exact movie as Tobe Hoper's classic horror film. Only differences is that it's all glamored up with these young hip happening and poppin fresh celebrities they got from bogus teen drama shows like 7th heaven and that crappy mtv version or Wuthering Heights (which has been remade about a thousand times) and had them re enact for the most part the original TCM movie. I mean you had Jessica Biel running around in a cut off wet tshirt but that was about it.

why remake good movies... it makes no sense. For example "The Ladykillers" is a fucking great movie... but it was remade into a shitty-in-comparison movie! What's the point?

I was alluding to the title of the original poster. I haven't seen Quadrophenia actually, couldn't find it in stores. Just got Netflix though. Into the cue!
I was just watching Tommy on Netflix watch now for the second time ever, and it is pretty bad and could seriously use a remake. Weird woman rolling around in baked beans coming out of the TV. Trippy.

Every now and again they do a good job on a remake. "3:10 to Yuma" comes to mind. However, these are few and far between.

I'm wary of seeing Cloverfield, NCFOM and TWBB as there is so much hype. I got told Pan's Labyrinth was the best movie of all time and bet The Usual Suspects (my favourite movie) hands down and also that it was more original than Nosferatu and Metropolis combined.
It was a crushing disappointment.

I loved Pan's Labyrinth and The Usual Suspects. Keiser Sose FTW! But NCFOM and TWBB are seriously amazing.
TWBB is ranks #15 on IMDB and NCFOM is ranked #32.

Yeah it's just well...Pan's Labyrinth was a real let down due to the fact I was pestered about it for 2 months before finally seeing it despite originally wanting to see it.
It just ruined it for me which as a shame as I probably would have liked it otherwise. I do enjoy weird movies. Anybody here seen The Prestige or Shadow Of The Vampire? I really like them though a lot of people hate them :).
I probably will see TWBB and NCFOM. Though Cloverfield sounds like a "film for the fanboys" which I would probably laugh at.

I've read a few reviews of people slamming it. Sort of like the way some reviews slammed the Usual Suspects. It must be to do with some people hating twist endings.

I'm pretty sure Cannibal Holocaust was the first "Found footage" movie. Then The Blair Witch Project. Followed by more recent films such as the August Underground movies. Trust me....it's been done before.

Well before the Blair Witch project, there was also "The Last Broadcast", which is also supposed to be very scary.

I've never found the "found footage" movies to be scary. I don't know what it is but as soon as that camera starts shakin' all the fear leaves. Except August Underground's: Mordum. That's more "Wow I can't believe they put that in a movie" scares though...gut f#%@ anyone?
