I have heard conflicting things about Vista.
What's the specs on your laptop?
Personally, I'm not switching over to Vista until at least late '09, i'm waiting for the hardware to catch up to Vista's new features.

I like it. But then again, I have 2 gigs of RAM.

Vista is not a bad operating system it just has some problems, some of which include compatibility issues with a number of different programs and the issue of speed when you purchase a laptop that has vista you should look for one with around 2 gig of ram. Personally I would not run vista with less than 1.5 gig because even though in the requirements microsoft recommends 1 gig, you will experience slow down because of the sheer amount of ram required to run vista.
I had vista on my computer for a little over a week because I got fed up with Vista having issues with some of the programs I normally use such as Easy Media Creator and Nero ( even though nero 8 fixes this problem). Now I dual boot windows XP and Mac Leopard ( which is amazing by the way).

I agree with DocHoliday. Vista is really good in my opinion, as long as you have a good amount of RAM.

I have Vista, it was a pain upgrading to the 64bit edition. But after all that I have no real complaints. I still dual boot, so when I do have the odd incompatibility, I just load up XP and work it out from there. Overall, if you mainly just surf the net, play video games, nothing tech heavy, it works like a dream.

My parents have Vista, and my dad is constantly asking me to downgrade it for him. I just haven't had the time to do it. In my opinion, XP is a lot better than Vista.

I've played around with Vista a bit, and it's not so bad.. But yeah.. compatibility issues are a major problem. Downgrading might be something you should seriously think over, because if not you're going to be getting pretty upset with your new computer.
