You could always rework the werewolf effect to suit your needs. I was in las mondays BFX episode.

The big fire belching floater one would be easy: Get a big balloon, coat it with paper mache (water, flour, newspaper strips) and then use more paper mache or something light and cheap like model magic to build the form on your round shell. Then paint the sucker with spray paint, maybe slather him with some goo to make him mucusy and string him on a wire to make him float. You could cut into him and stick an LED lamp or flashlight with a colored filter on the lens to make the eyes or mouth glow.
If you mean like the walking ones for film (as opposed to having one for decoration or to hold drinks at parties,) I'd do a real crappy makeup job and duct tape metal hardware where it needs to go to look mechanical and do all the far away shots, then just model the hands and face for close up shots where the monster interacts on screen. Dark lighting + high contrast = you getting to avoid having to make lots of details for it to be realistic.

Copy video games!! Use others' designs as inspiration! Express however you feel driven! When you learn to paint in the classical manner you copy the works of art you wish to have the skill level of. So why not emulate what gets you going for screen-based media. I mean, sheesh, if you're gonna be picky almost all the movie monsters and aliens are based on animals, and they all behave like carbon based life forms--go rip every movie ever made for not being original enough. Iffin you're gonna be picky I say stop copying the world around you with film and animate something truly original, since you're literally copying the world to film anyway! Creativity in any form should be encouraged.

I would say Don't copy anything, but thats impossible. So, copy as little from one thing as possible. Unless of course its a parody.

Thanks, that's a great tip, I'll forward this to Robby, he's in charge of this project.

The big fire belching floater is called a Cacodemon. Here's a link you may like containing all the doom monsters, descriptions, and pictures.

Those would be complicated, you could either just do a person in zombie make-up with fake limbs attached to them (we've shown how to do both), and just have them crawl around.
Or you could maybe make some miniature models, film them against a green screen, then composite them into the footage.
There really isn't any "easy" way to do monsters so complicated and with so many extra organic development on the creature, it makes it really complex.

I agree. There isn't an easy way to pull of such a thing. Look at Howard Hawk's "The Thing from Another World" and John Carpenter's "The Thing". Both of them based off a novella about a shapeshifting alien, but the complexity of the alien organism featured in the novella lead Hawk to use the "frankenstein monster"-like creature. Though John Carpenter's "The Thing" had a creature that was closer to that of the novella, even the simplist of creature effects for that film was difficult (and they used stop-motion and practical effects in order to pull that off). If you're going to do a creature like that, it's going to take time and a little bit more money to pull it off.

that would be insanely hard. like 6 hours of make-up.
By the way Dead SPace is the coolest game ever

I can't really tell what they look like from that but i haven idea from the commercial what some look like...we could simplify at as zombie like monsters with lots of limbs.
you could wrap the person in burlap, or a sheet spray painted, flesh tone, then ad over latex and fleshy ripples of the sheet, then had in make shift limbs out of twigs or something in weird finger formations then cover it in wet paper towels to make it look thick, then add latex paint it, i donno how the head looks, so thats up to you but do thinks like that as long as your have flesh like skin and fleshy arms you got a pretty crazy creature.
if i had a better example i could help with some suggestions, it would be hard to create and take lots of time.

I actually have been working on something like this for a while, please note that this will be a long and painful process of getting the thing built and attached, and it will be an even worse hell for the unlucky fellow that has to wear it.
A while ago I rewatched the thing, and thought about how I could recreate something like that. So I started up my creature design, and it came out looking like one fine mutant. As it turns out, my friend shows me this game called dead space. He claimed my mutant-creature design looked similar to the whole necromorph creature, so my mutant design became a necromorph design that day. Anyways enough rambling. Now the difference between this design and the necromorph is, for starters, necromorphs has a whole lot more gored up flesh showing, where as this one revolves mainly around a long coat. However the long slashing arms still remain, along with a few other things. I'll show you a guide later once I have it full finished. I've just ran into a small snag involving prosthetics, but I have a feeling I'll be able to fix it soon. Post more later.

Thank god somebody mentioned John Carpenter's the thing... I cringed when I saw this thread because I'm starting to feel a generational gap on the forums.
"So you want monsters similar to John Carpenter's the thing?"
"What's that?"
