For horror stuff, how about full holes in people, missing arms etc. I know it is green screen stuff, but the actual HOW is what is stumping me. Thanks.

If I had to venture a guess. Say you're going to do a hole in someone's stomach. I'd rip, and cut the shirt out around their stomach as desired, with the blood and gore effects around it. Then go in with a "rescue yellow" green backing that is a complete contrast to the colors worn by the actor, and using your tripod get a steady shot of the scene behind him. Then film the actor. Or, just get a shot of the scene outside you want to use, then go to your indoor studio and film your actor infront of the green screen and lay the image in like you normally would.

Funny, shot I was wondering about. I thought to shoot say 10 to 20 seconds on still shot of the background, then start a new one and shoot the guy, with the area on his body blue (or whatever). Then in editing, key the stomach with the shot of the background in the same position and then done. Now you say green backing. Do you mean cloth to put on the stomach, paint, what? That is the catch I am at. I want to try this, but what to put on the actor.

all you have to do, is film your BG (as long as its a static shot this is so easy) and then get a piece of like high lighter green oak tag, cut a circle in it and tape it to your actors shirt, then key out the green ad put the BG in under it, as long as its a static shot thats all there is to it.

EDIT
if your going for an even more realistic look cut a hole in the actors shirt and put the green oak tag under it, make some damage to the shirt too so it looks cool and its not just a circle ! haha

Ok, maybe a shirt under the main one? Ok, that is cool. Now, if I want a person to have half of their arm gone, can I have that part of the arm in a "sock" and green screen it out?

sure, but thats a little trickier because the arm is curved which can add shadows so what you would need is a REALLY tight REALLY green sort of sock and you'd need to light it like a rock show to avoid shadows on the arm. there are "easier" ways to remove an arm or even blow a hole in someone if you're good with adobe after effects, do you have that?

I have a copy of after effects 6 pro, but only looked at tutorials. I need to really learn it. I think I will try the hole thing and do that and see how it comes out.

ok well with after effects you can just make a mask with the pen tool and that will cut holes right out of bodies, or arms right out of sockets ! you dont even have to green screen it, however that means you have to rotoscope it all which can be annoying ! haha good luck with the whole thing, hope i get to see it when its done

don't really have to use a green screen for the missing arm, just tuck their arm in behind their back and pull the shirt over them. Of course, as long as your lit up well enough on the actor's "sock" you should be fine.

I might do a video tutorial on how to do this in after effects (whole in a person line in shawn of the dead)

Right after seeing this movie I made a way to do it cause I thought it was the coolest effect.

I will try the hole first. I want to do other stuff, but I am just trying things right now.

It's not unheard of to get amputees in such films.

Yeah, Dawn of The Dead remake in 2004, one my favorites, used amputees. The oriental guy with one arm real life amputee and the guy with no legs, same thing. I wanted to know how to do it, because some amputees may be offended you ask them that and you will come into times you have no amputees to fill the spots.

I would do all that stuff with the stunt dummy. For a hole in a chest and stomach first I would take my stunt dummy. Then I would cut a big hole all the way through. Then i would pack the newspaper back in and tape the seems of the whole. I'm not talking about taping it back up. I mean like taping the inside so the newspaper won't spill out. Ideally you should be able to stick your hand through the hole. Then place your shirt over the dummy cut the hole in both sides of the shirt. Then using make up, liquid latex, spray paint, etc cover up all the tape and make it look gory. For a missing arm I would duct tape my entire arm to my back. Then using the arm from the stunt dummy i would maybe cut it at the elbow. Attach it to your shoulder and you have half a missing arm.
