IndyMogul have already done zombie make-up (http://www.indymogul.com/backyard-fx/episode/bfx_20070604) and 'BFG' (http://www.indymogul.com/backyard-fx/episode/BFX_20070827) tutorials - so why not check them out?

Sorry, I thought you were just mentioning that you were using the Zombie effects and gun effect from the show.
You didn't really ask for any tips.
Things that work well though I think is go to flea markets and good will and stuff, you can get cheap clothes really easy, tear them up, get them dirty, it's a really easy way to make the Zombie's look more realistic.
Also, tried to make your Zombie actors as varied as possible, if all of your Zombies are 14 year old boys, it'll look strange, get someones Mom, or just an older friend to help.
Putting them in different costumes each scene can also give the illusion of a greater number of Zombies.

I suck? No boy, you suck for coming here and insulting others. You need to start growing up seeing as you are about 13 and would be an "young man". If you want respect, GIVE RESPECT. Don't make me out to be a bad guy and whine like a baby after the fact. I don't care you are 12, if you act right and try to be mature and respect others, then it don't matter. You talked shit and was put in your place. Now you don't like it and whine about you are 12 and you have no money. Sorry, but that doens't excuse you popping off your mouth.
I hope all you do does go right, if you don't like me, oh well. If you talk to your parents that way, you need to stop and act like a young man, if you want to be treated like a young man. Like I said, I hope your film REALLY does well. I would help you out if I could, but don't be a baby now and whine after you ran your mouth. Makes you even more a child.
NOW, do you need help? What have your bought so far and got going?

Are you making a movie that happens to have zombies and a BFG in it or are you basing your film around these Effects?
If you are I'd suggest that you write your movie out first and at least make some notes before you just start filming.
I'd also say that when you're filming, most young film makers tend to just use handheld cameras and unless you're doing a comedy documentary like 'Spinal Tap' this never works (with the exception of certain shots). So if you can, get a tripod. If you can't get one just rest the camera on a table or some static surface for most shots.
I hope this random advice helps. :hayguyz:

all i can say is, Fake blood is cheap but an ass to get off, guts that are actually guts, Reduced Meat from the supermarket, and for the make up, egg carton bottoms covered in Tp and Liquid (and filled with TP soken in the fake blood) for a blown out wound look, it comes out quite well. i will post the zombie film i'm working on when its finished!

sandmanfvr

Zombie clothes are just plain clothes, dirtied up with dirt etc. They did the face paint etc. You can do something like that, use contacts etc. Make your own look! They did a leg rip, didn't work, but I would make the skin better looking texture, match the skin of the person you using, and then do the muscle better. You can use that for heads, arms etc.
What else do you need?

I was wondering if it is possible to create realistic Zombie make-up by just using tissue paper and glue,
because there are no places
to buy liquid latex from here in the Philippines.:(
ChaseOfSpades
06-24-2008, 04:18 AM
yes, but it will take longer. they've done an episode where they talk about it. you can always buy liquid latex online....trust me when i say that it is way worth it. once you get to playing with liquid latex it seems that the possiblities are endless.

This (http://www.indymogul.com/episode/bfx_20070604) episode describes using glue and toilet paper, but I highly recommend ordering liquid latex online. It is so much better and has many more uses.

Liquid Latex will work better than glue could ever dream of. The glue takes a long time to dry, and isn't very strong.

Probably a stupid and potentially toxic idea, but aren't some brands of glue basically liquid latex?
I think someone in a craft shop talking about copydex glue being latex. I'm sure a tiny tube of copydex will cost more in the long term, but in the short term it's a bargain.
Check out any local craft shops for latex, failing that there are shops with three Xs in the window.

Probably a stupid and potentially toxic idea
Yep, quite possibly. I'm no expert, but I do believe that the ammonia content in those latex carpet adhesives that Reddkryten suggested is significantly higher than in cosmetic latex. Stick with proper liquid latex intended for makeup use. If you can't find it locally, buy online. It's a terrible idea to potentially do damage to yourself for the sake of saving a couple of dollars.
After all, the only glue one should be using (if you're in that unfortunate position) is Elmer's school glue. A pain in the butt for makeup, but safe and non-toxic. You can eat the stuff, for crying out loud.
Reddkryten
07-05-2008, 08:11 PM
In my defence, I checked out copydex, it is listed as safe by the manufacturer, another website mentions that it contains mostly water and only a small amount of ammonia, it is recommended to children for craft activities and a few other websites talk about it for prosthetic use.
I don't want anyone to think I'm being reckless and going "hey lets pour random chemicals on our faces" without research. However I'm still not 100% sure about it.
PhantomOnABudget
07-05-2008, 08:21 PM
That wasn't directed personally at you, Reddkyten. I had never heard of copydex before, but if it's proven to be safe, run with it. I just see people confusing that with off the shelf latex adhesive that isn't formulated for use on skin, and I get a bit concerned. I'm all for saving a buck, but if people aren't familiar with a product I just think it's better to play it safe, even if the risk is fairly limited.

Hi every1,
Ive been watching movies like 'planet terror' and 'diary of the dead' and each of these has this cool effect where they show zombies with the front of their bodies completely open so you can see all there insides and stuff. They also do it so as they walk all their organs begin to fall out of their bodies. Its quite disgusting! I was wondering if you guys at indy could recreate this for cheap, or if any fans know how to do it can u please tell me???
Cheers-PM John Howard

Create a pocket on the stomach or chest area with latex(two pockets on each side with a slit in the middle to fill up with organs)
you can make organs out of anything, indy mogul uses nylons(i think) with dyed cloth and paper towels for the intestines.
you can ball up foam in certain ways to create other organs look in a medical book or website if you want it accurate cover your models(foam balls, newspaper balls) with latex and paint with reds, blues, whites and blacks.
you will need to tape some of these organs up or glue them if your zombies are gonna stand. or if you want them to blop out like in day of the dead make sure, whats behind looks like an empty carcass.
I think indy mogul already did this effect..I could be wrong.

If you wanted to show someone getting their head ripped off use the fake head from the decapitation episode and use the muscle fiber stuff from the leg rip thing and combine them.

Lucky for you bodies bloat when they die. You can reasonably be expected to pull off the effect simply by building the entire thing out of latex and guts right on the actor's chests without having to worry about proportions.

"Realistic" and "zombie" constitutes an oxymoron: there are no REAL zombies, therefore whatever you do will be as realistic as anything else.
Prior to George Romero's flesheating "Night of the Living Dead", zombies for the most part were simply dead people who had been reanimated, either by a person or a curse. They were identified usually by another character as such or simply by "but he's been dead for years" sort of dialogue, and often by the title of the movie. Otherwise, they were just ordinary looking people with vacant expressions moving with an awkward gait. Tor Johnson and Vampira were zombies in "Plan 9 from Outer Space".
So if you're making a zombie film, bear in mind that you aren't required to make them rotting or flesheating. You're the boss. Since the whole thing is hocus pocus anyway, they don't HAVE to be decayed, since decay is a natural process, and a zombie has basically tossed "natural" out the window, probably onto that rake your dad told you to put back in the shed so it wouldn't rust, but you ignored that, did as little actual raking as possible, and ran off to make a movie instead.
That's gonna leave a mark...
theSarge00

Lucky for you bodies bloat when they die. You can reasonably be expected to pull off the effect simply by building the entire thing out of latex and guts right on the actor's chests without having to worry about proportions.
Actually, post-mortem bloating is situational, and relates to interval since death, humidity, and various other environmental factors. More often than not, bodies appear to shrink, as fluids, no longer being circulated, begin to react to gravity and settle at the lowest points of the body, leaving the upper faces looking more gaunt.
Stop looking at me that way...I can't help it. Shutting up now.
