Okay I'm making a film and need a prop sniper rifle however I live in Canada where all airsoft guns are clear, expensive and well most of them are handguns (I haven't seen any sniper rifles). The only thing I found close to what I am wanting is a three dollar cap gun that looks like crap. Any suggestions (other than the internet my parents won't let me buy stuff off the internet for whatever reason). Please help!

Well, seems to me you'll have a problem without that thar internet.

Paintball guns may work for you cause, however. Although, Airsoft (Softair) is still the way to go in my opinion.

Take that 3 dollar gun and modify it. Buy some pvc and maybe add a longer barrel, a pvc scope, ect. Then paint it all black. Then if you can paint in details if you want. For a school film I once used a putter as a rifle, but the camera angle (strait on so the end of the handle looked like the end of the barrel), muzzle flash, and sound effect made it look real beleivable.

pretty cool for a cap gun

Yeah it is pretty cool for cap gun. Unfortunately it's to small for me to hold (I feel not to mention look scrunched up) and my film is a "Bourne-like" film as in government hitman gets stabbed in the back so I need it to look more modern and less "Wild West".

Is it plastic? some hardcore sanding should do the trick, remove the eagle on the stock, cut off the estra finger gaurds, not the one for the trigger finger, but the other ones. You can cut off the turnstile, but that could end up bad. make a magazine/clip out of cardboard or something around your house, paint it all black again, and voila(wah-la?) you are done.

I have a "Nerf" gun, longshot, I painted it black and it looks like it could hurt someone. It has fold out legs for sniper shots. And if you take off the small gun you have a nice covert ops gun.

A PVC tube, and some cardboard, and some wood.

Cut the shape of the stock of the rifle you want to use from wood, pad it up with Cardboard, on the top attach the PVC tube, make sure its about the size of the Rifle barrel you want to use.

On the side, cut a slit and another up slit so you can get a piece of Balsa wood and stick it in there, so it looks like you are cycling a round.

Take off the scope and make it bigger with some cardboard.

Paint the whole thing black, and glue and nail it together.

It shouldn't look that bad from a distance.

Thanks for the ideas I guess I'll just have to give it some more thought and try out your ideas.

Edit: I'll post pics when it's done

If you haven't made it yet, and have some woodworking skills and access to the tools... here is a brief Tut on how I made my sniper:

It's a Sako TRG 22. I got a pic off google and scaled it up, printing it to make a pattern. mine has a removable clip and a working bolt action but I'll just say the simple version. (if you want these just ask)

cut out this shape (1) (sorry about the crappy pics) on a piece of timber about 40-50mm thick. I dremelled the pooey out of the handgrip to get the grooves. get a pipe for the barrel (i used a curtain pole) and then use a router to cut a groove in the top, all the way along.(2) if you can't do that, cut the pipe in half lengthways and just glue it on) (3)

get a piece of 3mm plywood and cut out the foregrip and glue it on(4) get a piece of pvc pipe , cut it in half and stick it on the top(5) put the barrel on, passing under the pipe make the trigger from a toy gun. I bought a rifle scope off E-bay but you can just steal the one off your cap gun. paint it as you desire.

sorry about the rushed job, hope it helps.

this is my one (the scope isn't attached so it is lying next to it)

I say the gun is good as is, personally. You got to keep in mind you're the biggest critic you have. You're going to think something is going to stand out, but you have to keep in mind you know where you got it from. The majority of people won't. It's like the swords from Highlander, the majority of them where just dull bars of aluminum, hell no real definition or shape at all. It's all about your presentation.

It's like the eagle, one person pointed out you should sand it off, but I say you should keep it. You could cover it with a piece of cloth, or you could tape off the area around it and spray paint it gold so it stands out. You can hide it easily, or make it stand out and make it apart of the story.

Predator - that is a really nice prop. You should consider a Harris bipod (http://www.uws.com/HARRISBIPODS/HomePage.html) for the front of it to complete the "tactical" look. They're pricey, but cheap ones occasionally show up on ebay. Or you could just use a Harris as a reference & build something similar.

Nothing says "I'm gonna shoot somebody through the head!" like snapping out the legs of a bipod and taking firing position.

Here is a link on how to make a heavy Stormtrooper Blaster from Star Wars. Same principle for doing a sniper rifle, you would just need to make in look less "spacey".

I agree cut off the big finger guard, but no matter if you sand off the eagle and thhe pattern on the body you'll still be scrunched up holding it! id suggest making a cardboard body that covers over the western details of the rifle
and definitely make a bigger stock! it might look a bit "off" but it could work.

Or if you have the tools available to you you could make it out of wood and put in realistic details...just look at pictures on the web of sniper rifles and base it on that

-Get rid of the stock you have now with the eagle on it, make a wooden one (or cardboard, w.e.)

-Make the new one look and shaped it like this (or about)
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1169/riflebutthelpcx8.png

-Put a handle on the gun for the trigger and get rid of the
other finger guards

-Make the top barrel longer (PVC maybe)

-Create a bipod on the front (two legs that stand the front of the gun up, possibly some PVC with endcaps)

-Possibly make the ending scope lens bigger by making a cardboard cone spray painted black

-Definitely make use of the strap

-Add cheap door hinges and things unnecessarily to make it look more technical

-Paint the whole thing black again

I know, that sounds like a lot, but it's enough to scare the neighbor kids!!

Why cut it off? Just put a longer stock to the current stock.

Here's the trailer for the movie that I need the sniper rifle for. I know it's pretty cheesy but for a first film it's not bad. Sorry about the poor quality youtube files need to be compressed a lot.

Careful dude, you might shoot your eye out...
(Sorry, totally necessary...)

So Woodsman have you started on this yet? I can help out a little more if it's needed.

Also I agree with Jier on not cutting off the stock and just extending it. If you use thin cardboard and wet it to work with it and put it in position, you can let it dry and attach
it to the stock.

Actually my dad got a raise at work so my parents bought me that Nerf Longshot dart gun on the weekend and I've been spray painting it all week haven't gotten that far though I've been busy with school and work (one of the reasons I haven't made many films).

That would probably be best. Or at least get rid of the orange a bit...
