Who owns the rights to the song "Hallelujah"? There have been many versions of it. I know Leonard Cohen was the original composer/singer dude. How do people get the rights to record this song? Do they buy the rights or has the copyright expired? Anyone know?
I just wanted to record it myself and was curious.

I did... I've searched a couple times, but I must not be typing in the right thing... or Google is mad at me. Google hardly fails me. Maybe I've been working him to hard.

I assume they get the rights like most any song, they get the reproduction rights from the Record Company that owns the song.

Mozart did an "Alleluia" that might be public domain now.

The Leonard Cohen song, not the Handel oratorio? Not exactly certain, but the specific album it was on was distributed by Columbia Records (http://columbiarecords.com/) (whom are owned by Sony BMG (http://www.sonybmg.com/)). I'd contract them.
