Alien chest burst effect

I want to have a costume with a rig that will sprig an alien out of my chest, (An alien babe from the "Alien" movie series "Alien" "Aliens" "Alien3" "Alien Resurrection")


features that I need are:

Alien springing out of my chest when someone answers the door (at the touch of a button or something)

The alien stays attached to my chest and doesn't fall off, it just springs out pretty far.

easy to reset (push button, alien pops out, push alien back in, repeat.) if it could be like that it would be awesome.:fcross:

I suggest making a ballistics gel sheet, carving it kind of like a chest, paint it up, cutting a slit in it, making a alien out of polymer clay, bake it so its hard, paint it up, and put it on a stick.

For the electronics regarding a trigger that can make something jump like that, you'll need some kind of small electric motor, and some kind of trigger, or switch for it, and a power set-up.

If you are electronically inclined, might I suggest modifying a Halloween gizmo that jumps out once a motion sensor is activated.

What it does is when it is activated it usually completes a circuit that activates the mechanics to make something jump out, if you have any kind of knowledge of electronics, it shouldn't be that difficult to modify it for the circuit completion mechanism to be a manual switch instead of a IR motion sensor.

If you aren't, I could POSSIBLY draw up some diagrams on how you could possibly modify it.

I wanted it to be for a Halloween costume not necessarily with electronics, have you ever seen those snake things that you can buy and putt in a book so that when your friend opens the book it jumps out at them? well I was thinking of something as simple as that. well with more to the costume to make it look good and with the things I said I needed from before.

For what you described, It'd probably be easier to make the alien, then attach it to your hand like a puppet, and mabye cover your arm in fake blood/guts, kinda like the brain tutorial. Whichever arm is occupied by the alien puppet, make a fake arm to put in the empty sleeve of your coat/sweater/whatever. This would give you a lot more control of what the alien does, and how it moves etc, and also being very easy to reset - just pull the alien puppet back through the hole in your clothing and repeat as necessary.

relatively simple effect, depending on what you want. the close up is of a dummy. using liquid latex, and maybe even dipping latex for skin, or you can do the foam soak as seen in the limb tear episode. you fill the stomach with guts and blood (maybe a couple blood pumps that can squirt, or just like a big bag that burst when the alien comes out) and then you have your alien. you push the alien from underneath, probably have some sort of black or red fabric to prevent seeing the puppeteer underneath the body. you could even have an actor underneath the body as well to put his hands at the stomach at the time of the alien burst, to add to the illusion. that's a rough idea. hope that helps

You could have the puppet/blood in a zipper pouch in the belly of the actor's shirt (even better if he's wearing a sweatshirt). when it's time for the alien to burst out, have one piece of fishing line to yank open the zipper, and the other to yank out the alien puppet!

like what Luchastyle said, i would make a dummy, but the only part that needs to be realisticish is the abdomen(by that i mean the whole area that the shirt would cover, including arms) (which doesn't necessarily need to be that realistic cuz there should be a shirt over it). then you do the guts and alien thing that he said.
Then to top it all off, make a mask of the area that the shirt covers and put it over your footage of your actor acting like it just happened.
one majorly important thing is to make sure you filmed the dummy body at the exact same angle as your actor. also, I would suggest making the dummy a little larger than it should be, because you can scale it down or whatever else you need to do to make it fit in post.

They've told you how to do something like this already. If you watch the stunt dummy episode, you can use the same technique to easily take a cast of somebody's chest.

You could then fill it with fake guts or an alien and put some old tearable clothes on it.

You could do the thing where you bury the body (not the head/neck) of your actor and take a cardboard box and cover it with latex and make up, fill it with fake guts and all that good stuff, throw a shirt on it and have your zombie tear their freakin' brains out.

Yeah, Alasdair is right. You already know the techniques to make this, they just aren't in the form of a fake chest.

Personally, I think the best option would be to buy a styrofoam torso for displaying clothing. Erik bought styrofoam heads from www.valuedisplay.com (http://www.valuedisplay.com). You can also just check around in costume stores and see if you can buy any extras.

Hollow out the chest area, then go over everything with layers of liquid latex and paint. Then you can fill up the hole with some ballistics gel around the outside. This is done by putting a greased cup or small bowl in the center, then filling the surrounding area with gel. When it dries you can slide out the cup and have a nice mold.

Fill it with whatever you like!

ok all you need is a pillow and a pillow case then you could but ziplock bags of fake blood under the pillow case and for guts uhhhh you could use a homemade method i made... first you get microwavable noodles cook them then pour fake blood all over it then stir.. its pretty cool. so wene your done with filling the pillow case with your stuff put a shirt over the pillow case then stab away.........p.s i recomend a close shot while doing the stabbing... have fun:D

It's easy just follow these steps

1. Get or make a chestuburster replica puppet that wiil fit over your arm (flesh cloroued sock with fake chattery teeth smeared in golden syrup and blood)
2.Have your actor put on the sock.
3. Get the actor to put on a long sleeved shirt with a small cross cut into the front of the shirt.
4. Get or make a fake arm to relpace the arm currently occupied by the the puppet (See Indy Mogul's stunt dummy episode/limb tear)
5.Have your actor keep the puppet under the shirt and have the fake arm put in the empty sleeve.
6.Shoot it and have your actor act all sick and then punch the puppet through the rip in the shirt. and then dramtically die.
*7 (Add a blood pack under the shirt that is burst on tear for that extra gory effect.

You'd probably want to do something similar to the heart tear episode, but instead you drill a hole in the bottom of the chest, put an alien on a stick, and just push it up, so it would pop out of the front.

But you can get your actor to react, and you can have someone hiding a puppet on a stick under their shirt, and have them push it up, and have a tube going to the end of the puppet so you can start squirting a little blood.

But have your person sitting, and the puppeteer sitting out of frame with a stick up the actors shirt, have your actor react and get them to start shaking it around and making it look like something is trying to pop out of their chest.

THEN, you cut to your actor positioned BEHIND the dummy, so you can see their head, and for the close-ups, film the alien popping out of the dummy chest.

Then you can cut back to the alien puppet spirit gummed to the real actors chest, with the shirt all torn open and bloody.

So you go, someone just bouncing a stick around in their shirt (maybe with a puppet attached, maybe with some blood squirting out of a tube similar to my cutting tutorial you would just use a tube and a nasal bulb.)

Then you go to a close-up of the alien popping out of a fake chest similar to the heart tear build.

Then you cut to the actor reacting with the puppet spirit gummed to his chest and his shirt totally torn open with lots of blood and stuff gushing out.

Then you can jerk the puppet out completely out of the fake chest with the dummy, using fishing wire (you'll need a complete puppet for this instead of just the puppet on a stick), and you can show it skittering off.

Then you cut to your actor falling over dead with a large bloody wound created on his chest, you can keep squirting blood out and he can fall over and die.

I was inspired at the fact in Alien where the baby alien jumps out of ash's rib cage, blood spilling all over his shirt and runs away!
i was wondering how we can make a baby alien, make it look like its coming out of the chest, like trying to free itself and make it run away! :confused:

The effect in Alien was produced by having the actor stick his head and arms through a table with a fake body affixed (similar to the 'blown-in-half' episode of BFX). As far as I know, the alien was a puppet.

We have just established Fake table with holes, fake chest, puppet.

Please use you imagination and adapt things. Indy mogul have shown us how to make a stunt dummy (fake chest) and chest tear effect (bloody goodness) A puppet (Alien) and blown in half (fake table)...There is no point in them doing this!

No way you could do a alien suit for "cheap", but for the chestburster you could just modify the heart rip effect, and do it backwards. Put the dummy on a table with a hole in it like the blown in half effect, and have a chestburster puppet explode through with a blood shooter.

As for the alien costume... that would be a toughie for under 50 bucks. I would say take what you have learned from the muscle suit, swamp monster & giant sandwich costume and you could come up with a good result.

Get a tight fitting top and pants and build on it with foam shapes and cover in panty hose skin. you could make a type of backpack that had the extruding backbone on it and a tail coming off it (made of foam). For the head maybe something similar to the demon episode with green potting foam as the extension on the back of the head allowing for nose putty and latex facial details.

The flaw of it all being foam is:
1. Thats a helluva lot of foam!
2. It could end up very mascot like. Maybe for the backbone and tail you could make the structure out of chicken wire and cover it with foam. It may be more restricting, but it'll probably look more reaslistic.

You could find a tutorial online for a super realistic costume but it aint gonna be cheap!

Watch the BFX episode where they blow someone in half. (Bur use a whole lower half stunt dummy for the chest and legs of the actor) You can then just make a hand puppet out of a sock and liquid latex for the chest burster. Use liquid latex for the effect where the skin stretches out, lots of red food coloring for blood.

To do this effect you must first build a table with a small hole in the middle and a large hole at the back next you need to build a headless dummy with a hole that is not visible in the middle.
how it works is the dummies hole matches the small hole in the table and the actors head replaces the dummies so that the puppet pops out of the small hole and the actor screams in pain well in fake pain

they did a slant board for the cut in half effect. this is how they did it in the movie and have another guy under the table purging through the fake body (stunt dummy) and your real arms and head will be going through the table like in the body slice effect.

Oy... the request was for a costume, meaning something mobile, light, and easy to reset.

This would actually be REALLY easy; you'll just want to bastardize the idea behind a jack-in-the-box....

First, you'll need a long, relatively weak spring (the weaker the better), you might want to just pick up a wobbly hat or jack-in-the-box & steal the spring...

Next, mount the spring to a small piece of plastic, like the lid to a coffee can (face the lip out to prevent injury (and to provide mounting points for gore!).

Then, you'll need to sew a long tube out of some cheap fabric (at least as long as your spring...) & turn it inside out.

Then, craft a face for your alien (I'd use a light frame like styrofoam & maybe beads for eyes...), but keep it only about an inch deep.

Paint a varnish over the head (you may have to coat it with a layer to prevent a reaction b/w varnish & foam, so use some scrap to test this...)

Then super/hot glue the head to the spring & then the tube to the back of the head.

Staple the spring & tube to the coffee lid base.

Build a spring loaded latch, w/ hook to hold down the head**

**this is the only part I'm lost on... haven't built anything moving before, and don't have the time for the semantics (I'm at work as tech support), so I apologize, but trial & error would help here... maybe build a separate frame to support the latch...

Stand the spring head on it's base & paint with latex paint to hide the seams & staples (you could use caulking hear, it's dirt cheap), and put in your details like more wrinkles, veins & whatnot.

Staple some straps to the base a la an arc reactor base (check instructables for a reference), then staple a little spare fabric to the lip of the lid.

Hang the spring upside down when the paint dries & paint the scrap fabric to look like torn skin.

Now, if this thing only has to look good for one day, you could also rub it down with Vegetable Oil (cheap slimy shine!) or glycerin (not cheap, but much better shine)...

Grab/buy/borrow a cheap shirt (button-up or t-shirt, but it should be fairly loose...).
Carefully mark & cut where the apparatus lines up on your chest.

Hang the shirt & paint on your dripping & splattered blood, making sure that you radiate from the hole...

Put on a black undershirt, strap on your chest piece, throw on the shirt & you're golden...

This would also look better if you're wearin' layers, but... it depends on how big yer chest is...
