I'm not sure if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it in the search feature. If it has been asked, please direct me to the thread :).

Anyhoo, I was wondering how I would go about to create the effect in Garden State where Andrew Largeman is sitting on a couch at a party and everything around him is sped up. Everything except him.

The effect can be seen briefly here at 25 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u82n0e1mgmQ and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNUK5sKtMeg

It's probably much more simple than I'm making it. Is he simply just sitting still and moving slower so that when the film is sped up he will look as "normal" and slow as possible?

Am I overlooking this too much? :teehee:

Thanks in advance!

Mitch

Most probably. You could try shooting the people moving around him on a greenscreen and composite them into footage of him just sitting on the sofa, but that would be more trouble than it's worth and probably not look very good. You'd be best off doing it this way.

Or you could shoot the people at the party and the actor you want to remain still on greenscreen... that way you only have to add ONE person into the shot and not twenty.

It looks like he's just moving really slowly because sometimes it looks like he jerks into position.

That's exactly how it is done.

VideoMaker has a nice tutorial on it:
