Knowing what type of camera you have would be nice to know. but i have a xl1s and i got a Bogen 503 (old) head and 3021pro sticks its pretty lightweight compared to some of the bigger sticks but it gets the job done. The head is completely frictionless because it is fluid head. The 501 is another option it isnt fluid its teflon plates greased but its still pretty smooth it just sticks on the start and stop. 503 is wayyyy!!!!!!!!!! worth the extra money.

I use a Libec TH-M20 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=131444&is=REG) fluid head tripod. It's such an amazing tripod for it's price. It costs around $180. It has a fluid head, and excellent legs. It's very durable. And it even came with a bag.

I'd say its performance rivals tripods in the $300 range. It's the best bang for your buck tripod. If you get it you won't be disappointed.

My question is.. what makes it soo good? For someone to spend $300 on?

its $180

it holds alot of weight, you might have a small camera now but this looks like it'll last ya.

i think its got a ball joint which makes leveling SOOO much easier and faster.

its got a spreader, which is very handy, its in the mid section of the tripod, but still very handy. keeps the legs where they need to be.

its a fluid head, though i'm not sure what tripod head (for video) isn't fluid these days, its still a nice thing to have.

and it comes with a case.

AND someone here has it and says its good. seems to me like you can't go wrong.

I will second the Libec tripod. I have used it and it is excellent for the reasons nooneimportant77 mentioned. Especially for the price.

i think its got a ball joint which makes leveling SOOO much easier and faster. You thought right. I can't express how helpful that thing is. It even has an indicator to show if the tripod is level. That could just be a common feature though.

i sues a manfrotto 475b tripod, (the cheapest manfroto tripod with indy leg spred, and it has center suport bars ) with a 503 hdv head on it, each part is about 300 bucks

i got one from the 80'sold old velbon vgb 3, not 37 just three, pa says it was 95 bucks (us)its not liquid, but its got enough lube to be, center peice with three things sticking out to the legs.. dunno what that's called, degree indicator for all 360 degrees spherical not circular, and according to velbons tripods it holds like 10 pounds of camera, pretty damn worth it to me

I have the Velbon DV-7000, it's about $110 on B&H and probably the best low end tripod for the money. The Matthews M25 is also a nice choice, but the head is a simulated fluid head, opposed to the Velbon which is an actual fluid head... surprisingly the M25 is more expensive.

I use my tripod to hold my camera(HV20), 35mm adapter, my rod support rig, my matte box, my preamp mixer and my monitor... thus I need good quality tripod, if you're shooting with a cheapie camcorder than a expensive tripod is overkill.

if you can afford them, i truly think than italian manfroto is one of the most reliable stabilization company in the world, my personal opinion though

Be carefull lots of tripods are labeled as "Fluid head" when it is just greased teflon plates and yes they are descently smooth but not as smooth as a true fluid head.

I use the davis & sanford provista 7518. You can get it on amazon for $190, and it hold 2-3 times the weight of the others mentioned.

It is really nice, with the ball head w/ level, and fluid etc.

The Matthews M25 is a good example of that, it's not a true fluid head.

I have an HD Hg-10 which runs about 600-1000$ so its not a cheapie...

I would go with the Libec, we used a bunch of them in school and they seemed very lightweight and sturdy.

Off topic: What do you think of the HG10?

I love it, the only problem I have found is that there is not real manual focus, so it is hard to get good Depth of field, but besides that I love it. I love the hard drive (I don't have to buy tapes or nothin) I never really got into mini dv's, so thats why I got this over the Hv-20. and as I said, the only thing bad about it is the lack of manual focus.

I am thinking about the libec right now.
