View Full Version : How can I get this spirit gum off?

I'm going to be shooting this weekend, and I picked up some crepe hair and spirit gum. They came in a pack, so I wasn't thinking about taking it off. I did a little test with it on my hand, and I'm really glad that I did because I would have been pretty stressed out having an actor with her face covered in spirit gum after shooting. haha. So, I was just wondering if there are any home concoctions that will take off spirit gum easier... I washed it with soap and water, really scrubbing it, and that did pretty much nothing. I just tried hot water with soap, and that didn't do much. I used rubbing alcohol, but I don't think that would be a very good solution if it's all over my actor's face... haha. How do I get this off? Thanks!

Just get Spirit Gum remover. FallingStar's suggestion of nail polish remover might work, but seriously, get Spirit Gum remover.

Yes spirit gum remover should come with the spirit gum. I think it normally does.

baby oil will get make-up off but not spirit gum. Try rubbing alcohol, SG remover, or Acetone

No offence but these are the stupidest things ever.
Its on her face. You apply a chemical that people get high off of on their face? Come on. You dont want them getting high. Do you?
You'll need her for later.

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Please leave the make-up advice to people who actually know what they are doing.

I hate to do so but I'm actually inclined to agree with BinBin here. Acetone really shouldn't be applied to the face. Spirit gum remover and rubbing alcohol are fine, however.
In the future, try to figure out how to get makeup products off someone's face before applying it.

i have to agree with uhrisuh because it might have some harm but not really that much i mean your body was to handle with poisons if it couldnt it would have been probally dead by now because you ate processed foodand also how can you get high of something if you dont get it in to your blood system maybe bit but i mean your body doesnt really get high of that its like saying i saw some guys smoking pot 50 feet away from me and i think i got high of that.

Or, in other words, putting Acetone on your face is bad, but it's not that bad? No poo-poo; once isn't going to kill you. I still wouldn't want it on my face.
Acetone is very harsh; it's an irritant and has a hepatoxic effect. I'd need a seriously good reason to expose myself or someone else to it; if someone were an asthmatic, I wouldn't even consider it. Tom Savini once had a health scare related to his liver, owing largely to his exposure to Acetone and other solvents.
I'm not sure what this stuff about 'getting high' is related to. My objection to Acetone is not related to 'getting high' - it is related to it being an industrial solvent that should not be put on your face. BinBin has a stupid objection, but the crux is correct: You shouldn't put Acetone on your face.
Here's the MSDS (http://www.bu.edu/es/labsafety/ESMSDSs/MSAcetone.html), reproduced by Boston University. Can be condensed so: Not going to kill you, but try to avoid putting it on your face.
uhrisuh, it's facile to excoriate someone as incorrect, but significantly more difficult to justify this. I have produced the Material Safety Data Sheet and it assents to my concerns. If you have material from a reputable source that encourages putting Acetone on your face, please extend it.

Fingernail polish, is full of chemicals. And people use that to get high off of. Not trying to argue now.

Well of course it isn't meant to be applied to the face. But you and me both aren't stupid enough to buy a product without knowing how to use it or get it off. Sometimes SG remover isn't available. I prefer it and always have it handy when working with spirit gum. BUT if you don't have any rubbing alcohol, or acetone will do just fine. After all spirit gum isn't the healthiest thing to put on your face either.

As an experienced makeup artist, I agree that Acetone shouldn't be used as a makeup remover, as it isn't intended for use on skin. I suggest any of the following:
Spirit Gum remover
Isopropyl Myristate (my personal favorite)
Isopropyl Alcohol
The alcohol can be really potent stuff and might sting a little bit, but it will remove makeup really easily, so if your actress is okay with that, give it a try. Spirit Gum remover is really good for doing the job it's named for, and Myristate is something that every makeup artist should have in his or her kit, since it works as a remover for such a wide variety of products.

LMAO
As for the Acetone thing, it says it right on the bottle that it should be used in ventilated areas, I used to sell it when I worked at Ricky's as a makeup artist. Truth is, you can use it, it's not going to kill you, but you should only use it if you're in a stitch, don't make it your only adhesive remover (which I know most of you aren't dumb enough, since spirit gum remover works better anyway).

same thing as getting high off markers or glue, but you have to SNIFF IT! maybe you should stop paying so much attention in health class most of it is lies anyway. I have done a movie where I had to draw a mustache on my face in sharpie and it smelled bad but I sure wasn't slipping around the room chasing bugs bunny

I was just seeing if there was an easier way of getting it off someone just in case I didnt have time to run up to get some spirit gum remover.... I'm not stupid... haha... And... "But you and me both aren't stupid enough to buy a product without knowing how to use it or get it off." umm.... Alright. Let's all stop for a minute. Let me go over this one more time since nobody seems to get this...
1) I have not put the spirit gum on anyone besides my hand. I do not plan on putting the spirit gum on anyone until I have a way to get it off.
2) I'm not stupid, and I was just trying to save myself a trip to the store to go and buy Spirit Gum Remover. Calm down everyone, I'm really honestly, (i know that this is hard to get) I'm not stupid...
3) As i said in my first post, I used rubbing alcohol to get it off my hand, BUT i didnt want to have to use that on my actress, because it's on her face. Relax. I HAVENT PUT IT ON HER YET!!!!
4) Thanks to everyone who was being helpful. lol.

Just thought I'd share... I just got gorilla glue all over myself because I was frustrated and in a hurry... I am a man, but being a man hurts... and causes you to lose lots of little hairs from all over your body. :'(
