Hey guys, I baught the Audio technica for my JVC HD Everio GZ-HD3 and I wear the microphone on the camera's shoe. Whenever the mic is turned on, and I zoom with the camera...I can actually hear the camera zoom in and out. See, i dont hear anything without the mic, so I know that the mic picks up this ultra quiet noise.. Anyway, would the only alternative from picking up this unnecessary noise be to buy like a boom pole, and put the mic on that? If so, what is a good affordable boom pole I can buy? I always pictured just buying a pvc pipe, and attaching the mic to that...maybe I'm just wrong...
I've seen people use bamboo. I've heard of people using an extendable painter's pole.
What's your shoe connection like? Is it solid, or is there rubber stuff to dampen vibration? I built my own shoe connection with some bolts, a short piece of PVC and some elastic bands so I wouldn't get motor noise from the tape.

I would go the boom pole route any time you can. There must be a reason why the pros do it that way and I think you may have discovered it...

they're REALLY light weight, they have a cable in them, they extend REALLY far. probably some other reasons too i can't quite think of now.

Do you guys have any recommended sites to buy boom poles other than ebay?

if i was looking at the right mic... i would say since the bottom of your hot shoe mount has a place for it to be put on a tri-pod, just buy a mono-pod at wal-mart, screw it on to your mic, and use that as your boom...

Yes, you need a boom. Mounting a mic on the camera will only give you good sound for things that are close to the camera, not your subject that's far away.
If you watch IndyMogul, you would know that they did an episode that shows you exactly how to make a boom pole for only $15:

A boom pole build was done some time ago.
I made one from a light changing kit and the holder that came with my microphone.
I added 25 feet of microphone cord.

You can make a boom with with a lot of different materials.
The humming is coming from your lens. The iris size is changing because of the auto-focus. You can make your boompole and buy an XLR extension cable then that should solve the problem.
