View Full Version : Making Music

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I've mentioned this around here...but I have been working on writing and performing my own music here in the tri-state area seriously for the past few months.

My favorite podcast, MobLogic, recently has been doing coverage of the Sean Bell verdict which sparked something inside of me. The night I got the news of the verdict I wrote this song, "The Ballad of Sean Bell" and performed it the next day in Manhattan to the protesters who I joined in with at the Civil Disobedience initiated by Rev. Al Sharpton.

I was invited to play it at his meeting hall up in Harlem about 2 weeks ago and recorded the song a few nights ago in my basement. I'm proud of this, because for once I feel like I'm taking a subject I care deeply for...and actually doing something about it. Hopefully if I get the CD pressed at some place, I can hand it out and get donations for Sean's family.

Check it out at my myspace:

If you like it, then let's be myspace buddies!

For me, making music is extremely cathartic, and although I'm involved in Indy Mogul...it's music which is my true love. And for me, there's nothing like playing in front of people live and really just living in the moment, sharing a unique experience...never to be felt again.

I'd like to know...do any of you have songs you'd like to share or aspirations in the field of music? Let's see some links to your stuff!

You could write your music, then film the music video ;)

EDIT: It's weird to associate your voice with music, I've only ever seen you in Indy Mogul.

There will most likely be some kind of video put together soon, I've been speaking with a friend who is really interested in working on it with me.

My music and video loves started at the same time, as I recored my first "album" (if it can even be called that) on my video camera.

This is awesome Steve, added.

That song is really sad, such a messed up situation.

ah, but what you don't realize is that the background music during the build of the big jib episode was an original song performed by steve and some of his close friends.

I like if you break it, you buy it.

Do you edit your voice at all?

Brilliant song, and such a sad story. It reminds me a lot of Bob Dylan, especially with the harmonica. I really like 'if you break it you buy it' too.

I play synths and guitar - plenty of ideas floating around, but I've never been able to compile any of them into a song... oh well. I stole my brother's harmonica and now I'm buying a neck holdery thing for it - maybe if I look like a songwriter it will inspire me... or maybe I'm just talking out my arse. ;)

Nope, all my songs are live recordings...not necessarily with an audience...but it's always one live take and no overdubs or nothin'.

Haha. The harmonica really makes it legit! I'd just recommend writing and recording as much as possible. I've been writing songs since I was 11...now I probably would be hesitant to let anyone hear what I made up until I was 19, but the more you just experiment and have fun with it...the better you'll get.

Your music is really awesome! You make me think of...a blonde Bob Dylan in some ways. I sent a friend request and I'll be sure to spread the word of your music!

I've been waiting for you to post some of your music ever since the jib episode. The music was barely audible, but I still watched the episode loads just to hear that one song! Please upload it... and I will be happy.

Haha. The harmonica really makes it legit!
Hell yes! Everything sounds better with harmonica thrown in. Except maybe... death metal. But that sounds bad anyway.

Heh...thanks, Steve. I've always hated the way my voice sounds, so it's prone to getting tweaked via Sound Forge!
In contrast, your vocals in "Ballad of Sean Bell" have alot of bright intonation and clarity...as well as holding a nice rhythm - you've got the stuff man! Perhaps a collaboration, cuz my voice just aint cutting it! LOL!

The myspace link isn't working for me... D: but I don't have a myspace so maybe that's the problem? Is there any other way I can hear your music?

Either way, I just wanted to say I have so much respect for you for writing a song about a very difficult and painful situation, and using it to get donations for Sean Bell's family.

Music can be a powerful thing. I really appreciate when people have the guts to use it that way.
