I am going to take a leap here and assume were all mature enough to handle this thread. :fcross:

Me and my team are assembling a mock soap-opera. Admit it, sometimes things are funnier when people swear. This is to be taken lightly though, swearing isn't funny 100% of the time, nor 10% of the time. I was wondering, in these few funny moments where a swear has room to shine, whats the extent of swearing? Are there guidelines for online TV shows? What's considered 'okayed' for a small 10 minute TV show?

So far in the scripts we've mentioned 'arse' and 'dam'. The vulgar term, of course. We also have 'gay' in there once, which might not tickle some people's fancy, but is a commonly used term, unfortunately.

Please be mature about this, thanks :)

I think IndyMogul handles it pretty well. In the past, some of their episodes area a little vulgar, but the worst things they've said are "damn," "crap," and "ass."

You seem to be okay as far as cencorship goes.

MMkay, but not even just for IndyMogul, i was talking about the whole 'interwebs' or 'webbernet'.... or internet... whichever word you use. :)

But thanks! I guess this should be okay then!

If there's any guidelines, they'll depend on who is hosting the video files. But unless you're posting to GodTube or something, I don't think you'll have a problem with the occasional swear.

Phew!

I'm really glad someone started this conversation. It's a real toughy for me as I've got a comedy show online where the character sends the air 'a little blue' - none of the 'big hitters' but certainly 'vulgarities' like 'crap' and 'bloody'.

I try to keep stuff clean, but the main character is supposed to be such an incompetent idiot that he just says what he thinks straight away. I want to be true to the character and show him to be dumb... and the mild swearing helps tremendously.

There are a few bits of toilet humour dotted around too - cheap laughs but they seem to work in context.

I do have to sit and think in the editing process, however, as I want a wide audience, so I don't want to put too many people off... but I also don't want to create a character that doesn't show himself up effectively - or he would be bland.

Episode 3, coming this Saturday, has 'testicle' (medically referenced) and next week's show has 'bastards' (muttered) - and it might sound daft with relatively minor swearing, but I do worry about how it will affect the show and the audience...

...I usually give my mum a ring and check the words / sentences / situations out with her. I've had some bizarre conversations with her recently, as you can imagine... she usually laughs and says they're fine.

Nice to know that others take the issues seriously! Good on ya for doing the thread.
Check out the show if you like and see what you think of the occasional wafts of 'blue smoke' !!! Link below!
