Well, I personally am planning on getting the HVR-HD1000U, only because it is slightly cheaper (though as much as a used GL2), and I like the build of the camera, as well as the HD quality.
I have used a GL2, use them all the time in my T.V. Productions class, and it is a fine camera. However, I have been spoiled with using even better cameras, so the quality of the GL2 does not appeal as much to me anymore. But it has more on board controls than the HVR does, and you don't have to go into the menu screen to adjust certain settings. Also the fact that the GL2 is not a touch screen LCD is nice, cause those annoy me. But I was looking forward to trying something new, and i have heard good stuff about the HVR, so I decided I will go with it.
Someone helped me out and posted this forum

Great knowledge base there, with threads for most all modern day camcorders. You can find both the HVR and the GL2 there. I suggest just read up on both of them, and decide which seems it would work best for you.

Here are some comparisons.
HD1000U:

GL-2:

Personally, I think the GL-2 has a lot better color accuracy, BUT, the resolution doesn't compare hardly at all.
The HD1000U has a LOT of noise in it's image, and for being almost 2,000 dollars, I don't really see where all of the money is going.
I say either save up your money a little more, and buy an HVX, OR, take the 2,000 or so you already have and buy an HV30 and a 35mm Adapter.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Sony HVR-HD1000U? The price seems great, but I need to know about the performance. if anyone has any experience with it I'd like to know.
