Both of which are done in post production. Get a decent editing program that can use two tracks of video and has a chroma or screen key filter.

Explosions are the same way, but are alot more difficult to make look realistic.

Go to detonationfilms.com, watch a tutorial, and download some muzzle flashes and explosions.

If you were cool with the police and the FBI,you can get explosives to make them 70s action movie explosions.I'm pretty sure they do that for the Power Rangers too.

Me and a friend came up with an easy way to make some pretty cool fireballs, which range from 2ft to 5ft high. In slow-motion, it can make a pretty good explosion, but it wouldn't really work for guns unless it was a flame-thrower, or something.

We'll probably post a tutorial on the forums someday, so long as we don't get shouted at by the powers that be.

The one thing Jared said he was completely against people posting about in these forums was live pyrotechnics. (Kind of a bummer for me, probably the place I have the most expertise in) but...." dems da rulez"

Ah well. I guess it makes sense - my face nearly got burnt off the first time we did it (my friend's fault for pointing the shooter at my face).

All the same, a digital explosion can look even better if you add actual debris as a practical effect.

The IM Blood Shooter can be used to shoot dust instead of blood, and a few pieces of wood or fake rocks for the actors to react to can really help to sell a digital fireball.

For example - using a digital effect to blow out a window can look even better if you toss some dust, broken cork tile or balsa and smashed candy-glass out the window at the point where the digital effect will be added. The debris gives the actor something to look at and act around.

As for gun-shots - don't forget the value of practical effect "haze". Guns make smoke (even the modern smokeless powders) so as a gun-fight proceeds, the set should get hazier. Maybe IM could do a quick tip on attachments that will make your fogger create a larger, more diffuse haze effect. (similar to what they did for the "ground fog" tip)

in the film industry, you can rent foggers or hazers for your production. hazers do exactly what you're talking about, and i'll figure out a cheapass way to recreate the effect very soon.
*jots down "hazer effect instead of fog"*
